I have just been to visit Charlie in The Royal Derby NHS.
He hasn't seen the consultant since the operation on Friday however he will know tomorrow what the true extent of the injury is and when he will get home.
As a trainee nurse he is getting good research on the other side of things and said he could get used to this treatment and getting wheeled down to costa coffee if it wasn't so painful.
His only complaint was that he didn't like the fact that a steel plate and screws are in his leg, he wanted allu or titanium to keep the weight down when gets back on the bike :-)
I passed on all your best wishes and sniggers and my parting words on his antics where YOU'RE A RIGHT CHARLIE!
Thanks for the update John.
Thanks for all the goodwill messages, they are all really appreciated. Thanks for the visit John, those wee gifts have made the stay much more bearable! Doc just been around and happy with the physical aspect of things, just need physio to give me the all clear balancing on the old sticks and getting up and down stairs now and could be out today.
Let this be a lesson to you all though, don't overinflate your CX tyres if your riding on the road over wet leaves. (Well that's my story anyway and I'm sticking to it.)
Were they the wrong kind of leaves Charlie?
They were the leaves that disrupt the whole British Rail Network...Burp oops...Burp oops ...Burp oops :-)
so is it a broken leg?
Sounds pretty bad for a post pub slip up, hope you're back on your feet again soon
Get well soon Charlie, you did seem a little squiffy when I spoke to you at the bar on Thursday (if you remember!).
Get well soon ......was it your tibia of filbula ? x
Let me know when your home mate and I'll pop round with those books
Anyway, enough about you Charlie, is the bike okay?
Good point Paul!
Charlie, heal fast and let us know if you need any reading matter etc. btw I came off going a lot faster and only got a graze, I must be super tough ;-)
Can I borrow some of your 'reading' material Guy? Hopefully I won't come off too fast!
Seriously though Charlie, we could do with some updates on your leg. Hope it doesn't hurt too much.
How about Sex, lies and handlebar tape? It's a bit racy!
Back home now with a shiny new cast and a bag full of drugs.
Got to see the X-Rays before/after today in the plaster suite, both tibia and fibula broken (Sarah) wiht a great big metal plate bolted to the tibia to keep it together. Waiting to find out if its a steel plate, of course if it is then I will be demanding it be ripped out and replaces with some titanium.
Also the first time I saw my leg shaved in many years, just a reminder of one of the reasons I stopped racing. Nice clean stitching though, everyone seemed impressed by the job! Meant to ake the phone down to get a couple of photos but forgot, will remember when I get a wound check in a couple of weeks.
And I still blame the leaves.
Sorry to read of the accident Charlie, hope you have a speedy recovery.
Damn those leves ;)
Whole affair sounds pretty nasty mate. Good luck with the recovery. I have cycling books and DVD's to spare if you have the time. My advice from the last 2 years is to take your time. Easier said than done.
When the Doc told me my pins and plate were made of titanium I smiled and said "I've always fancied titanium." He gave me a look which said "You're a bloody idiot aren't you!"
Why didn't you want carbon, apart from that they put the stuff in pencils?
Going stir crazy yet or are you now trainging for the wheel chair marathon?
Currently weighing up the pro's and con's of fixing an SPD cleat to the bottom of the cast. Pipecleaner arms negate the possibility of wheelchairing it much further than the end of the road.
Popped in to see Charlie on the way back from a glorious ride to Ferrer's Centre (just rubbing it in Charlie!). Thanks for the cuppa! He is at pains to make it clear that he was not riding a motorbike but was in fact on his winter steed, lest we think he's some kind of drunk driver or something. Not our Charlie, no way!
It's not you guy's I'm concerned about, its those weird non-cyclists who assume you mean the motorized version when you mention the word 'bike'
Been for 2 week follow up today, stitches out and new cast on. Everything looks good (apparently) but still have to keep the weight off it for another 4 weeks.
Some nasty photos below, not for the squeamish. Don't drink and ride!
You broke that good and proper didn't? Hope it mends ok
Ouch!! Get well soon Charlie
Hey Charlie, that looks sore, I bet you are itching like crazy ;-)
Good news from the hospital today in that I can gradually start to walk again but more importantly I can start to pedal. The Consultant looked at me like I was crazy when I asked him if I could ride a bike, but when I explained that I meant a turbo he agreed it would be really beneficial but only in the house - and Mrs McD was there to hear it!
Going to give it a whirl on Monday when little cildren are out the way and see how it goes, I know its not the open road just yet but it's a start.
Still looking for a Shimano 7 speed cassette, by the way ;)
Good news Charlie, looking forward to the day when you can ride the turbo on the road... next step stabilizers? ;-)
I'm thinking trike
Difficult to turn with though...
Or tandem?
great news! keep those legs turning!
Cheers John, your support has been appreciated over the last couple of months!
Nice one Charlie
Good to hear Charlie! Hope you're back on the road soon.
So the pedalling can begin again... Great news. Just be careful getting on and off the bike!
rollers?
Recumbent Tandem ?
What could be better ? You and Mrs McD can enjoy cycling safely together.
When I showed my wife the recumbent tandem picture and asked if she would enjoy riding it with me I received no verbal feedback to my suggestion. I just got a "Lance Armstrong Look" before she walked away.
It's a tandem chopper, fantastic!
Really feeling the love, thanks people!
Sticking with something supportd and stationary until I can stand unaided though!
Great picture mat - that was a hell of a stage between Armstrong and Ullrich!.
@Charlie - that tandem would be perfect if you're tiring and the wife could help you get home...
If ever a look shock someone to the bones of their ancestors, that look from Armstrong turned Ulrich into a gibbering wreck!!
Shame they don't do these on the NHS...
So which seat would be mine then Paul?
Not sure really, just thought it looked like a strange concept!
They missed a trick there. Arrange the pedals out forwards in the pushchair mode the little one can assist by pedalling.
I think that is an excellent idea. They need to make it a little less bulky though.
First real physio session today and I threw down those crutches and walked, it's a miracle!
Did quite a bit though, slow and (un)steady with about an hour of unaided walking. Going to pay for it tomorrow but definitely moving in the right direction and worth it!
Good lad!
Social tomorrow night then :-)
The right direction being towards the Hop Pole?

Here here. Karen assures us you left the pub safely and alcohol had nothing to do with your subsequent accident ;-)
