Following the distinctly flandrian weather over the last week i have pondered the requirement fr a decent waterproof jacket - my £10 aldi special doesn't appear to be very effective.
Its one thing on a commute that only last 50 mins but for a bit of comfort/piece of mind on a longer ride i think that it is time i wnet for something of a higher quality.
now obviously price is an issue and i don't really want to spend over the odds so does anyone have any good suggestions?

thanks mike - will check out the DHB.
TBH i'm quite happy with the £10 aldi - its ideal for the commute even in the horrendous rain we had yesterday morning - most importantly i didn't get cold, just a bit clammy!!
My Gill has lasted me years and is still pretty water proof and folds up reasonably small. Breathes pretty well too. It was £120 but I got it for £90 as a replacement for a jacket I bought in Freewheel that the zip broke on and they didn't have another alternative. I bought it for MTB where you're often be out in the elements for hours but not working at the same sustained level as road so more of a risk of getting cold.
I agree with Mike's 2 'waterproofs' statement, a lighter weight shower repellant (which you already have) and a heavier water proof!
Although, this does look very promising: www.neverwet.com
Expect a long wait and a £1000+ price tag in a cycling application then :-( I'll probably be getting the kids one after I've hung the bike up.
just found a bontrager eVent jacket on e-bay waiting and hoping;
it would seem that the gill or dhb jackets are unavailable now!!
Can't believe they don't make that jacket any more, it is really good. Good luck on the e-bay auction.

- I have the previous version, which doesn't pack down quite as small. Excellent rain protection!
My Gill is eVent too
I have three, a hi vis Aldi special that cost £20 and isn't breathable but ok for my commute, it is quite thick so it is great for winter weather. I have got two Gore gore tex jackets, the first cost £65 new and the other £25 used but it really light and both were bought from fleabay. Keep an eye out there and you should get a new for £50-60
i am now the proud owner of a brand new bontrager event packable stormshell - £60 bucks ebay

this evenings soaking was the last straw
No more showers for Mr N now. You've been warned!!

The dhb eVent one is fantastic, great cycling cut, long sleeves and made from the best breathable fabric, makes gTex peform like a plastic bag in comparison. Not sure if they still do it, but it is a gr8 jacket, ask Guy too. Used to regularly discouted to £80. Is based on a famous Gill pattern that Wiggle bought. In any event, get an eVent jacket!
To my mind you need 2 'waterproofs' a/ a true waterproof like the above, that doesn't come in the ultralight dept, but I can fit in a back pocket. b/ an ultralight pseudo waterproof (showerproof), likely to leak like a sieve at some point in anything other than drizzle, that point being sooner than you like, but will at least keep you comfortable(ish) on those days when a shower is possible, but you are being optimistic and it is probably summer. Personally I go for the Aldi £10 special for this application.
