Chain Gang Blue

Ride time: 19:30 Wednesday 1 Feb

Meet at: Argos

Route:

www.bikely.com/...teady-chaingang

The last couple of weeks have been super smooth with ten and 14 riders out.
Again not intending to ride too quick but the pace is beginning to pick up a touch, probably looking at averaging 18mph, but there are no surges in pace (theoretically!) or difficult climbs so if you're not sure turn out and hang on the back rather than taking a turn. We tend to stop on on the Mway brige before Leisure Lakes just to make sure everybody is happy with the way we intend to do it, so shout up then if its your first time.
I'm hoping we can cap the speed a bit and concentrate on technique to allow more people to join in but as February comes around people are bound to start getting frisky so get yourself out now.
There is potential to play it by ear and finish off with an extra lap.
No breaks for the finish line allowed until we're passed Risley Park!

Leaving 10 minutes before you this time :-)

john14:56 Thu 26 Jan

Sounds like this has potential to develop into a two speed chaingang, must be somebody out there who wants to keep you company John.
When are we going to stop calling it the Development chaingang by the way? Makes us sound like retards! (Is that a PC term, don't want a reprimand) I've been riding twenty odd years and its the smoothest ride I've ever known.
PS Would there be any demand for a quick slurp in the Crown afterwards, either going directly or maybe out for last orders after a quick change?

julianbramley17:49 Fri 27 Jan

Lets call it The Chain Gang Blue.
In a few weeks I will be back in tempo with you guys, so lets keep one group.

john23:29 Fri 27 Jan

Changed the name.

john23:30 Fri 27 Jan

(I won't be out if its frosty)

ciccione22:56 Sun 29 Jan

the Crown sounds like a great idea! (we could just do that instead if its icy???)

markn09:09 Mon 30 Jan

Is anybody welcome on this? I haven't joined the club yet (though intend to in the next month or so) but wanted to get out on more group rides.

lynus13:41 Mon 30 Jan

Hi Lynus, you are more than welcome.
Note this is a chain gang that is concentrating on technique first and speed will come.
Also for me who is unfit it is good winter training without getting dropped.

john17:05 Mon 30 Jan

Thanks John thats great. Couple more questions, how far is the ride (the link doesn't open on my machine)and is it poor form to just stay at the back until I get the hang of things?

lynus21:30 Mon 30 Jan

Lynus it's about 25 miles in total and completely flat save a couple of gentle gradients going into Risley.

We rotate round in 2 lines but staying at the back will be fine if that's where you want to be initially. You'll be in the swing in no time.

Welcome to BCC - try to make the social night too - good introduction to the club. Hop Pole front room Thurs 8th I think. See you Wednesday. Where will you be joining us? What you riding?

mat22:06 Mon 30 Jan

Can't attend this week chaps, the good lady wife has a meeting at the kids school.

Lynus, I only started this ride 3 weeks ago, its excellent fun and because you soon realise that everybody knows where everybody else should be there is much less worry than just banging along in a group where someone is likely to do something erratic.

danw09:55 Tue 31 Jan

My wife is out so I can't make it. She's not caught on yet that my big weekday cycling night is now Wed and not the old Tue/Thu routine.
Looking at the weather though I'm quite pleased.
Take care if you're riding.

julianbramley19:09 Tue 31 Jan

Met office giving 1 degree C, dry with light winds. So chilly but if you get cold pedal faster.

mat20:18 Tue 31 Jan

Hmm, accuweather gives -2 at 7pm. Enjoy!

julianbramley20:30 Tue 31 Jan

You sure your wife is out @julianbramley? Not just a fairweather Wednesdaynighter?

mat20:48 Tue 31 Jan

Are you suggesting I'm nesh! Lowest I've cycled in was -11 last year. Wore ski goggles!

julianbramley20:56 Tue 31 Jan

My finest winter gloves are an old pair of Ski gloves. Alpine sport's wear is the future of January cycing in the UK. What about cycling shoes with battery powered heated inner soles like some ski boots?

mat21:09 Tue 31 Jan

@ all those suggesting the Crown - where were you last week?

climberruss22:38 Tue 31 Jan

I don't actually function as a human below +3 degrees.

danw09:45 Wed 1 Feb

I am not going out if it dropping below zero.

john10:06 Wed 1 Feb

cycled into work this morning and it was lovely... however riding on your own with a beautiful blood red sun rising in the east and the occasional crunch of frost under rubber is one thing... riding in a bunch in the dark in freezing conditions is another... i'll reserve judgement until later but not massively keen if its freezing.

markn11:04 Wed 1 Feb

Fingers crossed it should be rideable.. A freezing night in december saw 3 of us out, but we changed the route as a straight out to pentagon island and back (keeping to main roads). It's an option for tonight deponent on views..

andyb11:27 Wed 1 Feb

That' "dependant" btw!! Flippin' phone!

andyb11:29 Wed 1 Feb

Met office temp now turned blue for 6pm!

mat12:43 Wed 1 Feb

would have been a lovely DAY for a bike ride :-(

markn14:37 Wed 1 Feb

not playing tonight

ciccione15:38 Wed 1 Feb

sorry guys, almost getting killed by a maniac on long lane made my mind up for me... i'll not be riding tonight.

now where is the long lane thread....?

markn18:02 Wed 1 Feb

I am out, sorry still at work and breaking ones neck just to get to Beeston never mind dealing with the conditions. :-(

john18:23 Wed 1 Feb

Is anyone still riding?

roberth18:27 Wed 1 Feb

OK, anybody still out on this?
I'll be out at 7.30 and will take a steady ride down towards Argos and meet anyone that is out on their way.
As Andy said the A6005 to Spondon and back could be an option?

richardb18:30 Wed 1 Feb

I'm waiting to see how many more hats are thrown into the ring. Feeling quite lazy but if there's a group out I will probably come.

roberth18:35 Wed 1 Feb

I am still riding tonight

marke18:42 Wed 1 Feb

I'll be out for my 2nd outing, must be mad but hey ho.....Steveb is out too.

adi18:49 Wed 1 Feb

I'm in too then

roberth18:57 Wed 1 Feb

I'm out tonight , but will go back in the closet later. Going to the crown after for a beer with my men friends!

jonm19:00 Wed 1 Feb

I'm out.
Will go to the Crown after - but only after changing into warm clothes

climberruss19:06 Wed 1 Feb

Just heading out now.. Don't expect to catch you up !!

andyb19:29 Wed 1 Feb

Let the bragging commence.....

I thought it was quite warm really.

roberth21:29 Wed 1 Feb

Comfortably numb.
9 of us out.
Fairly smooth even up the rise to Risley.
Roberth seemed to keep it together in Julian's absence.
Nice blast back round the opposite way at the end.
Good stuff.

richardb21:44 Wed 1 Feb

Very hot on the last blast especially the legs

marke22:17 Wed 1 Feb

Enjoyed that, good turn out in conditions. Yes good last blast, thanks for the tow to the finish line!

adi23:15 Wed 1 Feb

Mmm...got dropped. Not a good night for me. Legs not well recovered from the weekend plus a bit of asthma. Hey-ho. Must try harder.
Was really hacked off when I got home, plugged in the numbers and found that I was a whole 1mph slower than last week!

climberruss23:59 Wed 1 Feb

Rightly so I feel a whimp, with so many out, respect!
I don't like cycling in freezing conditions. Its not the temp it is the potential to come off.

john08:16 Thu 2 Feb

Russ.. I might not have caught you til the lights at the finish but enjoyed the chase and the chat heading back

andyb08:26 Thu 2 Feb

Good turnout in the end on what turned out to be dry roads with no signs of the slippery stuff.

steveb09:03 Thu 2 Feb

hope you are ok Mark and not too shaken

jonm11:27 Thu 2 Feb

cheers jonm - more annoyed that i didn't get the number plate!!

markn12:01 Thu 2 Feb

you don't want to get too close to the number plate tho'

jonm10:57 Fri 3 Feb

I have still got someone's light that I borrowed the week before last. Forgotten who I borrowed this from, was it Steve Pullen?
